Pubs & bars

Ah, the great Welsh pub. A bit like the great British pub but with more singing and fewer Morris dancers.

If you want to experience the authentic warm heart of Mid Wales then go to one of our pubs, but try not to be in a hurry. We love our locally-brewed ales and our home-cooked food but, above all, we love to talk.

It gives our pubs a bit of a buzz, or “hwyl” as we like to say, but it’s up to you where you find it. We have pubs for every mood and occasion.

Pubs for muddy boots and pubs for posh frocks. Magnificent old coaching inns like The Royal Oak in Welshpool or The Bear in Crickhowell, twice winner of the Best Pub in Britain award.

Canalside pubs like The Star at Talybont-on-Usk and pubs within tooting range of steam railways, like the Goat Hotel at Llanfair Caereinion. Quirky pubs like the Triangle Inn near Rhayader where the beams are so low you have to stand in a hole to play darts.

And not forgetting what the rest of Britain call “gastropubs” but to us are just pubs, plain and simple because good food isn’t a novelty in Mid Wales. It’s a way of life.

The motto of the Felin Fach Griffin near Brecon sums it up: “The Simple Things in Life Done Well”. Which in their case includes a perfect pint of Cribyn, Champion Best Bitter of Wales for two years running, from Breconshire Brewery down the road.

Pubs My Way

“You know there’s something special about the Felin Fach Griffin the minute you crest the hill.”
