The Ynyscedwyn Arches of the old Ironworks are a haunting reminder of Ystradgynlais' rich industrial past. Coal and iron ore brought years of prosperity during the industrial revolution of the Victorian era.

The flannel industry was booming further north in Newtown and it is this we have to thank for the now tranquil Montgomery Canal, built to transport this flannel far and wide. This gave rise to the first large scale mail order business, with Newtown's flannel famously used to make Queen Victoria's knickers.  She must have been pleased with them,  as later awarded its founder a knighthood.

The Holffman Kiln at The Llanymynech Limeworks is one of only 3 remaining in the country, dominating the local landscape with its impressive 42 metre chimney.
