Llanwrtyd Wells: Victoria Wells & Cledan

Llanwrtyd Wells: Victoria Wells & Cledan

Description

Note: Can be muddy and wet, with steep hills and rough ground. Leave Llanwrtyd square in a southerly direction and take the second turning right along Victoria Road, past St. James’ Church. Continue along the road as far as the Victoria Wells Log Cabin Motel. Cross the cattle grid and bear left up the hill between the buildings. This was the site of the second spa wells to be founded in Llanwrtyd and was opened on the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897, hence the name. Continue following the path through the trees to the gate before climbing to meet an unmetalled road. Turn left on reaching the lane above Victoria Wells and follow the track up hill until it becomes a metalled road. Until 1814 this was part of the main road from the old Llanwrtyd Church, to the Roman road on Cefn Llwydlo and Llandovery. Continue along this road until you reach the main road. Turn left then right almost immediately, over the railway crossing and following a small lane up hill for about 1km to Brynhynog farm. From here, bear slightly right in the farmyard and follow a farm track. Go through the gate and take the left fork in the track leading steeply up hill through another field, and through another gate at the top of the hill. Follow the fence to the next gate on your left marked with the town walk sign. Here there are beautiful views of the valley spread out before you (Pic 1). Cross the field to the gate into Crychan Forest. A narrow path rises up through the trees, crossing a forest road before reaching the highest point (around 300m) and joining an old unsurfaced country road. This road follows part of a Roman road which ran from Moridunum (Camarthen) to Viriconium (Wroxeter) in Shropshire. Turn left onto this road and follow it down hill for about ¾ km until you reach a crossroads. Cross over the crossroads and continue down the hill for another 1 ½km until you meet a surfaced lane, where there is a picnic table on a wide grassy verge. Bear left onto the road and follow it; after about 2km turn left into a field where a footpath sign points the way (Pic 2). Follow a feint track down through the field to the next gate then follow the fence on your right down to the stile at the bottom of the field. Cross the uneven moorland which can be quite boggy and bare slightly right to the corner of the field. Go through the gate and continue down onto the track. Turn right and follow the track over the stream until it reaches the main (Cefn Gorwydd) road. Here turn left and follow it back to Llanwrtyd Wells.
