Rhayader: Y Prysg Walk

Description
Pet friendly, not wheelchair or pushchair friendly. This walk is suitable for all the family, using well established paths and bridleways, although they can get a little muddy in places. It gives the opportunity to enjoy views around Rhayader without too much uphill effort. Commence at the Clock Tower and proceed down West Street past the Cornhill Inn and down the hill to the Cwmdauddwr Bridge and the falls that give the town it’s name: Rhaeadr Gwy—Falls on the Wye. Continue round the corner on the road out of town, to the end of the houses then turn right at the sign ‘mountain road to Aberystwyth’. After ¼ mile as you enter the trees you will cross a small stone bridge. Take the next left turn, over a narrow bridge and pass the house which was once a watermill using the stream to your left. As the lane bends round the house to the right, bear slightly left (almost straight ahead) onto a rough lane. You will pass through Tynpistyll Farm’s yard with the quaint farm cottage to your right. Go through the gate and continue along the farm track until you reach a junction of paths. Take the right hand path up through the woods and go through the metal gate leading to Lower Ochr Cefn’ house. Here you can look back down into the valley and the town. Pass to the left in front of the house and head up the hill bearing immediately right off the track heading behind the house between a line of trees (Pic 1). Bear left up the hill, following an old hedge and a sunken track to your left, to the top. Here you follow a path bearing left circumnavigating the orchard to your left and keeping a wire fence on your right, to a wooden gate. Take the left hand path down through the young oak trees (Pic2). When you come to a waypost continue straight on following the bridleway through the middle of the wood to a metal gate into another area of woodland. Follow the path downhill through a wooden gate and then straight down along a hedge lined path, to the B4518 road at the bottom. Turn right along the wide grass verge, past the house and cross the road shortly after at the roadside layby. Go through the metal gate and walk along the stone track. At the next gate you will see a red brick building (a valve tower on the Elan Aqueduct), go through the gate and into wooded area. Head straight on and you will shortly reach a tarmaced path, turn left and follow the path to a metal gate. Go through this gate and turn directly right and follow the grassy track. Pass through the next gate and follow the fence on your left through the field to a metal gate that gives onto a small road. Turn left onto New House Lane and proceed downhill, passing St. Brides Church on the left. Walk past the Groe Park and up past the Triangle Inn. As you join the main road turn right and head back into Rhayader over the Bridge.
