Llanwrtyd Wells: The Town Loop Walk

Llanwrtyd Wells: The Town Loop Walk

Distance: 1.5 miles,

Duration: 45 minutes.

Gates and no stiles; pet friendly.

Note: Mostly gentle walk, with some muddy areas in wet weather.

Starting at the Tourist Information Centre, turn left out of the town square and over the stone river bridge. On the right is the Calvinistic Chapel and the refurbished Victoria Square, home to the Victoria Hall.

Continuing along the main road, Irfon Crescent, Britannia House is found on the immediate left. This is where Sospan Fach, the famous Welsh folk song was written in 1895.

(For an alternative route cross the main road into Victoria Square and, keeping Victoria Hall to your left, follow the path out of the end of the square and over the timber footbridge. The path leads to the gardens to the rear of Stonecroft Public House, and then out onto Dolecoed Road, at which point you can pick up the ‘Spa Route’.)

Turn right along Victoria Road, past St. James’ Church which was built by David Jenkins in 1896, and out of town following the road up a small hill, keeping left for a little less than ½ a mile. You will pass a few houses on your right, and just before the first house on the left, Ton Villa, turn left immediately and follow the footpath up the side of the house (this can be slightly soft under foot even on dry days) to a small gate. Keep to the left hand side of the field, and at the top of the field go through the higher of the two gates to the left and walk along side the hedgerow. Go through the next gate and then bear right through the trees, through the five bar gate where there are lovely views of Llanwrtyd wells nestled in the valley bottom. Turn immediately left down the grassy track, at the bottom of the track turn left through a gate before you get to the house. Keeping the fence to your right follow it down to the next gate.

Once through the gate, continue right, along the boundary fence and around the field to the gate by the bungalow. This marks the site of the former pump house of Henfron Wells. Go through the gate and follow the track to the main road. Turn to the left and follow the road back into Llanwrtyd Wells passing Dolwen Fields and children’s playground on your right. You eventually reach the town square and the Tourist Information Centre.
