Welcome to Accessible Powys

Where Everyone Finds Their Way

In Powys, we believe that the joy of discovery, the peace of open landscapes, and the richness of Welsh culture should be experienced by everyone—regardless of ability, age, or access needs.

That’s why we’re committed to making our beautiful county as inclusive and welcoming as possible. Whether you move on wheels, use mobility aids, travel with support, or simply prefer an easy-access adventure, Powys offers a landscape—and a community—ready to support your journey.

Discovering Powys, Your Way

Step-Free Adventures

From flat, accessible walking trails in our nature reserves and national parks to step-free attractions and facilities in our towns and villages, there are plenty of options to get out and explore at your own pace. Many trails feature hard-packed or surfaced paths, accessible gates, and resting points—ideal for wheelchairs, pushchairs, or anyone seeking a gentler route.

Inclusive Attractions

From ancient castles and museums to gardens and market towns, many of Powys’s most loved destinations have made accessibility a priority. Features may include:

  • Level access or ramps

  • Accessible toilets

  • Hearing loops or sensory resources

  • Blue Badge parking

Please check individual venues in advance for accessibility information, and look out for listings that display accessibility symbols and details.

Getting Around

We’re working towards making travel across Powys more accessible, whether by car, public transport, or community travel services:

  • Trains: Stations like Welshpool and Newtown have step-free access and assistance available. Check services via Transport for Wales.

  • Buses: Many bus routes across Powys operate low-floor, wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Plan your journey with Traveline Cymru.

  • Taxis and Community Transport: Several local providers offer wheelchair-accessible vehicles. You can find local listings through Powys County Council’s transport page.

  • Parking: Blue Badge holders will find designated accessible parking spaces in towns, visitor centres, and major attractions. Always check signage and local restrictions.

Many local tourism businesses have accessibility statements, and several organisations across Wales offer planning tools and resources to support inclusive travel, including:

The Powys Promise: Accessibility with Heart

We know there’s more work to do—and we’re always listening, learning, and improving. Powys is a rural county, which can bring some challenges, but we’re committed to creating inclusive spaces, improving facilities, and supporting visitors of all abilities to experience the best of what we have to offer.

Your feedback helps us grow. If you’ve had an accessible experience—or an obstacle—please let us know. Together, we can make Powys even more open, welcoming, and enriching for all.
