Fun-Filled Day in Builth Wells
Builth remains a town rooted in all things agricultural. It’s surrounded by farming country, holds a livestock market and – most significantly of all – is home to the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society and its huge showground where one of Europe’s most important countryside gatherings takes place each summer. Discover a thriving shopping and café scene that will rival many urban areas, with the bonus of beautiful riverside walks along the banks of the Wye.
Morning
Breakfast at The Café
Start your day with a hearty breakfast at one of the cafes on High Street. Enjoy a full Welsh breakfast or a lighter option like fresh pastries and coffee. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff make it the perfect spot to plan your exciting day ahead.

Wye Bridge
After breakfast, take a short stroll to the iconic Wye Bridge. This picturesque six-arched stone bridge, dating back to 1779, offers stunning views of the River Wye. It’s an ideal spot for some morning photos and to soak in the peaceful riverside ambiance.
Builth Castle Remains
Head to the nearby Builth Castle, hidden on a hill opposite the Wye Bridge. This Norman stronghold has a fascinating history of battles and power shifts between the English and Welsh. Although now in ruins, the site provides a sense of adventure as you explore the steep mound and deep ditch. Don’t forget to take in the panoramic views over the town and the surrounding countryside.
High Street and Heritage
Wander down the bustling High Street, lined with charming shops, inns, and cafés. Stop by the Heritage Society, a shop packed with old photographs and local history. The enthusiastic volunteers are happy to share stories and information about Builth Wells' past. Pick up a souvenir or two from the local shops, offering everything from handmade crafts to unique gifts.
Afternoon
Pub Lunch
Treat yourself to a delicious lunch at one of Builth’s busy pubs. Most offer a range of traditional Welsh dishes and contemporary cuisine, there’s plenty to choose from to satiate your hunger, from Burgers to Bouillabaisse, and for non-meat eaters vegan, and veggie. Enjoy a hearty meal in a cozy setting, and perhaps sample some local ales or ciders.
The Groe

After lunch, take a leisurely walk in The Groe, a large green space by the River Wye. The park features a children’s play area, tennis courts, a bowling green, and a BMX pump track. Follow the tree-lined path westwards to the lovely spot where the River Irfon flows into the Wye. If you’re up for more adventure, cross the suspension bridge and follow the Wye Valley Walk to Pen-ddôl Rocks, where you can marvel at the dramatic rapids and deep pools.
St Mary’s Church
Visit St Mary’s Church, an imposing Victorian structure with a history dating back to Celtic times. The churchyard’s oval shape hints at its ancient origins. Inside, discover a 14th-century font, stunning stained-glass windows, and the effigy of John Lloyd of Towy, a squire to Queen Elizabeth I. The peaceful atmosphere offers a moment of reflection and tranquility.
Royal Welsh Showground
If you’re lucky enough to visit during an event, head to the Royal Welsh Showground across the river. This sprawling venue hosts various events throughout the year, including the famous Royal Welsh Show in the summer. Wander through the stalls, enjoy live performances, and immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of one of Europe’s most significant agricultural gatherings. Wear comfortable shoes to explore the extensive grounds.
