A once-in-a-generation moment for cycling, communities, and the landscape we love

In July 2027, the eyes of the cycling world will turn to Powys as the Tour de France arrives in Wales for the very first time.

It has been confirmed that Powys will host the third and final day of the Tour de France Grand Départ, marking a historic milestone not just for the county, but for Welsh cycling as a whole. While the Tour has ventured beyond France since the 1950s — visiting countries such as Ireland, Italy, Germany and England — this will be the first time a Tour de France stage has ever taken place in Wales.

And there could be no more fitting setting.

From Welshpool to the World Stage

The final Grand Départ stage will begin in Welshpool on 4 July 2027, before winding its way through the heart of Powys and onward to a dramatic finish in Cardiff. Riders will pass through rolling countryside, historic market towns, and the wide-open landscapes that have long made Mid Wales a quiet favourite among cyclists.

For spectators and visitors, it’s a rare chance to experience the Tour up close — free, accessible, and set against some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain.

A County Built for Cycling

Powys is no stranger to major cycling events. The county has previously hosted stages of the Tour of Britain and the Women’s Tour, events that brought thousands of visitors and delivered a significant boost to local businesses, cafés, accommodation providers, and communities.

Those events also showed something else: that Powys works as a cycling destination. Quiet roads, challenging climbs, family-friendly routes, off-road trails and mountain bike centres all sit within easy reach — making the county as rewarding for everyday riders as it is for professionals.

The Tour de France simply shines a much bigger light on what’s already here.

A Summer to Remember

The Grand Départ will form part of an extraordinary summer for Powys in 2027. Within a matter of weeks, the county will also host the Royal Welsh Show, the International Six Day Enduro, and the National Eisteddfod — creating an unparalleled season of culture, sport, and celebration.

For visitors, it’s a chance to combine world-class cycling with festivals, food, heritage, and the warm welcome Mid Wales is known for. For local communities, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to share their places and stories with a global audience.

Inspired by the Tour? Ride Powys Your Way

You don’t have to be a professional cyclist to enjoy the roads and trails that will host the Tour. Whether you’re a family looking for traffic-free paths, a road cyclist chasing long scenic days, or a mountain biker drawn to forest trails and technical descents, there’s a ride here for you.

Explore our cycling guides, routes, and bike-friendly places to stay, and discover why Powys is a destination worth riding — long after the peloton has passed through.

July 2027 will be written into Powys’ story. The invitation is already open.
